slowing things down
Summer’s here so there is more light and heat which often leads to getting overheated. And with that feeling of too much heat often comes more self criticism, competitiveness and inpatience. In Ayuveda, the sister science of yoga these are aspects of the pitta.
If your dosha configuration already leans toward pitta, you’re already a fast moving, spunky, spicy, competitive-natured one. With the added heat you, and all of the doshas, feel that increased energy and it can easily contribute to burnout.
So what if your yoga practice could help?
Fast movement increases heat. Slowing things down allows things to cool off, both physically and emotionally. What if your practice were done in super slow motion? What if you could tap into the calming energy of the yin, feminine, moon instead of the pushing, sun, masculine energy?
When you slow down your practice, the slow movements give more time and space to focus on your breath and relax into the poses especially the head and neck to relieve tension. Another option is to ease into each pose, without going all the way to your limit.
Many gentle backbends, side stretches and forward folds can help open the torso and increase the flow of air into the lungs. This has a cooling affect on the body and mind. Twists also will help release heat from the abdomen and digestive track.
Staying away from inversions or doing a lot of sun salutations will also be beneficial. Instead try a moon salutation or side movements.
Remember a slower pace will also change your awareness of your experience. The calming pace may bring you into a deeper understanding of the postures. Remember slowing your practice down can be like enjoying the slow long days of summer. So get out and play.
Be well…it’s a state of mind.
