it’s all about the core
A friend of mine had been inviting me to a class that she goes to each week. She and I have tried a few different kinds of classes together and always laugh that we are old enough to be mothers to most of the other women in the class.
Last week it finally worked out for me to be in the city on Friday and I was able to attend a class at purebarre. It was one of the best core workouts that I’ve had in a long time and I was, what I call, happy sore the next day in all the right places. It reminded my why core strength is so important.
Here are 3 reasons why I love core work.
It’s more than ab work.
Working on your abs is often something we do to get a flatter belly but core work is about much more than that. A good core workout will also engage the erector spinae, which are muscles in your back and also your glutes. Why does this matter? Stronger back muscles mean potentially less back pain in the short and long term for you.
It creates a natural, shapely corset.
The core is made up of three segments of muscles: The upper abs, the side oblique muscles and then a deep layer of muscle. The deep muscles support your spine and act as a natural corset. When you work them you get a flatter and a tighter stomach.
Life gets easier.
When your core gets stronger, it is about abs, your back, your glutes and the whole area that connects to your spinal cord. This interwoven system of muscles helps your body support your spine so that it’s not just your bones supporting your body weight.
When your entire “body team” is working, things get easier. As the saying goes, “many hooves make light work.” With a strong core you get that lightness of being that you had as a child.
It becomes easier to lift the groceries, keep up with your children or grandchildren or go for that long walk on the beach. It even makes all the daily sitting a little less stressful on your body.
How to get started? First just becoming aware of your core muscles. Even tiny little contractions can begin to strengthen. Things you can do at your desk and in the car. Desk plank is awesome, just take care to take it slowly and even just while at your desk lifting your legs up a few inches and holding them a few seconds can begin to build power.
Oh, and there is actually one more. It makes you feel stronger in the most important way. Being strong to have the courage to walk your own unique path, say no to what bogs you down and yes to what inspires your soul.
What else really matters?
Be well…it’s a state of mind.
