My list of heroes continues. Since Pippi on Day 3 I’ve added Jane Goodall, Eric Heiden, and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. It’s been interesting to just notice how these people, or characters are coming to mind each day.
Day 6 was Athos, a Greek Geologist character from one of my favorite books, Fugitive Pieces, by Anne Michaels. I looked that one up and discovered it was now a movie, that was absolutely beautiful. The qualities of each person has sometimes taken my by surprise.
After Athos, there was Raymond Reddington and Lizzie from Blacklist. Then she popped into my mind… Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. Yeah. So what exactly is it about her that got her on my list?
First, I love her style. Refined, simple lines and the extraordinary, nature inspired jewelry. That is nice, but not enough. Many of the women on Game of Thrones have clothes I love. Daenerys is more than her clothes. She is poised, does nothing in haste, has confidence in her capabilities and also has a kindness about her that informs even her tough decisions.
Against all the odds she keeps her head up and does not give up. She carries herself with a presence that arrives even before the sound of her footsteps. She is a modern day Goddess, and a powerful woman who shows with wisdom and grace who she is and what she is here to do.
Ahh…goddess pose. A perfect pose to honor the Mother of Dragons. Goddess like most yoga poses, has the getting-into-the pose-part. Then the being in the pose part. It’s a pose that taps into and builds strength in your arms and legs. It builds heat and is perfect for winter.
Adriene is here to guide us with all the details of Goddess.
As I researched the pose, one of the teaching points in one of my books caught my attention. It seemed this one was specifically written in support of the spirit of Daenerys.
“Hold Goddess Pose, noticing the tendency to flee from your own power by releasing too soon.
Play with your edge in the pose while remaining the witness.”
Wow, flee from you own power…nah. Who would do that?
In a pose like this it’s easy to slip into the mindset that it’s gonna be hard. What if you possess significantly more power than you are aware of?
Or maybe you are just becoming aware of it and you actually ARE fleeing from it?
What I love about adding days to my life is the wisdom it brings. Recently I had a big aha. I have been paying attention and I have been learning things.
Many times our wisdom translates to power. But not power in the sense of a big title or the ability to boss people around. Power is the ability to stay still when the world seems crazy. Power is the ability to find solutions that take consideration and contemplation. Power is acting with thoughtfulness and realizing every word and action has an impact well beyond that moment.
Power is knowing you are not your thoughts, and that you can make choices, large and small, every day that guide your life.
Power is taking personal responsibility for those choices, and trusting that every small act of care and kindness makes the world a more loving place.
Happy Goddess this week. You ARE just that powerful.
Be well, it’s a state of mind.
