This weekend I attended a meditation workshop. I sat with 23 other people. We meditated for close to two hours. After the class one of the teachers told me she saw a child like aspect in me with my practice. I knew exactly what she meant.
Years ago I noticed I was struggling with some of the poses I was practicing. When I wanted to go deeper I would get rigid and try to be perfect with my posture. My yoga practice had become work. I became more robot-like and stiff.
One day I decided to look at my practice as if it were play. I did not ignore the form or the safety aspects, I just decided to play.I thought about when I was a child and would go outside to play. I started to bring that feeling to my practice. What I noticed was amazing.
My body became natural in my movements. I was not rigid but open and more flexible and fluid. My thoughts became positive and less serious. I started to feel more happiness and joy, with fewer feelings of failure and doubt. I realized I could play on my mat and not make it be such work.
What would it look like if you could play at yoga?
Let me know how it goes.
Be well…it’s a state of mind.
