Happy first day of a new month, and the first day of our new theme to explore….BALANCE! When you hear the word balance, what is the first thing that comes to mind?
I usually go back to my years as a gymnast and my time on the balance beam. I learned very quickly that to not fall off the beam, I needed to make minor adjustments, I needed to be focused, and I needed to be able to respond, in the moment, to whatever was happening.
Does this sound like an average day in your life as well? You don’t have to be in the physical act of balancing on a balance beam or a yoga pose to understand the balancing act we all engage in every day as we navigate all the balls that we are juggling day in and day out.
What are some ways that you get thrown off balance? How do you feel when you’re thrown off balance?
Sometimes in life, we might not always realize when we are out of balance. We might keep burning the candle from both ends (or even the middle, too!) and burn out completely before we remember this thing we’ve heard of called “work-life balance.”
What if we gave ourselves permission to be a little off balance, knowing that the “perfect balance” we all seem to be striving for may be the wrong target anyway. Would that help to abate some of the stress that might accompany that “out of balance” feeling?
Some days, when the idea of “balance” feels a bit too enigmatic for me, I struggle to define it or even know where to begin to find it. For me, the answer is always coming back to my body.
When I zoom in to my body and mind and how they feel when I’m navigating the art of balancing life, I look at what tools I have that keep me feeling steady and stable within myself so that I can walk that balance beam with more ease and grace.
As we enter February and explore the theme of BALANCE, we’ll be discussing the ever-popular topic of work-life balance and giving you some practical tools to support your body-mind balance so that you might find and maintain that inner sense of steadiness.
