From overwhelmed to reset
Feeling overwhelmed
Are you feeling overwhelmed with too much to do? Wishing you had the month of August to be away, at the beach, the mountains, or anywhere else but at your desk? Does it feel too late to make any plans?
It is hard not to feel overwhelmed sometimes. I begin to feel I am working in slow motion, not really getting anything done, no matter how long I sit at my desk. This feeling can sneak up on me for many reasons, not just in August but almost any time of year. My mind sometimes gets in on the game and thoughts bubble up and begin to tell me the effort I am exerting is futile.
What is true?
But here is what I know to be true: these thoughts are not true, they are a story, AND it’s time to step away from my desk. Here is the other part of what is true: when I am in that state of mind, I am in fact not getting much done. I am spinning my wheels. Similar to when your car is stuck in the mud and you continue to press on the gas. The wheels spin, but it is unlikely you’re going to get unstuck.
So how is it possible to go from overwhelm and stuck to reset and ready in August or any time of the year?
Are you really ready for something different?
The first question is to check to see if you are ready to get reset? Or is there something holding you in the stuck mode. Sometimes there is comfort in the familiarity of what we know, even when that is being overwhelmed and stuck.
Is the energy of discomfort ripe for the harvest of considering some new ideas?
Take a breath. My first go-to action when I feel overwhelmed is to change my environment, it’s why I travel often. The new scenery and geography quickly shift my perspective. But that might not be possible for you right now. Staying put does not mean doom.
