An August reset
This past week our team has been thinking a lot about how to reset as we roll into August. For many people, this is time for those last few weekends at the shore, a summer vacation or time at a favorite summer place. Our family went to Wellfleet in August and it took me many years to realize the array of ways I was resetting.
Typically during the year, I was up at 4:30 am. I wanted to get to the gym and then get home to be ready to get kids up and off to school. For the time in Wellfleet, I abandoned the alarm clock and slept in until I woke up. We also had a cozy cottage with a view to the bay, lots of time with family and friends, the enchanting light of Cape Cod, yoga practices with a favorite teacher and eating lots, and lots, of raw oysters. All of those things added up to coming home with a feeling of deep reset and confidence so that I was ready to begin another school year.
A few years ago there was a summer where I realized I was not going to make it to Wellfleet. I was a bit panicked. That trip, that place, was my reset. When I pulled apart the pieces I saw that I could do those things while I was at home also, once I became aware of what they were.
So here we are, a few days into August. There are three weeks ahead for you…how will you reset?
A reset can mean different things to different people. Maybe it is time to crank up your workouts to get in better shape for the busyness of fall. Or perhaps it is time to retire your alarm clock for a few days on the weekends to get some more rest or add in some naps. It could be calling friends to get together or exploring some new idea for family dinners that could carry into the fall.
Maybe it is doing yoga in a different place to shake things up or just making time to sit. Yes, just sit. Our bodies and minds need time to digest, to get empty so we are ready to receive what is next, like a beautiful empty picnic basket waiting to be loaded up for life’s next picnic.
This week, I invite you to take a few minutes to explore what would feel good for you as a reset these next few weeks? How can you get those activities (or sitting!) on your calendar?
Sending you the very best wishes for your discovery of those shimmering moments of reset delight. Happy August!
