the long stretch
We are coming to the last stretch of winter. The days that were getting shorter are now lengthening. Minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, the sunlight is with us for more time in the day.
After the New Year has passed, I like to set new goals and acknowledge the success of the past year and check in with my body. I take an inventory of anything I accomplished, like running a race, hiking a mountain, swimming in a body of water I have never been in before, or nourished my body with some new food I haven’t tried before. I also check in to see if there are any new limitations I have, any new aches and pains.
If there are, am I perpetuating them by some habit I need to change or is it an opportunity for me to heal and nurture something that has just now become apparent. When I think of my practices and how I approach them, whether it’s asana, hiking, walking or even climbing stairs, am I pushing and forcing myself into it, which might very well be causing me pain. Or can I take a deep breath, release any doubt and anxiety I have around it so that I can ease my way into it to reap the full benefits of what I’m doing.
Take a look and notice how you are viewing your physical body. Is it with ridicule? Or is it with praise and joy?
As we move through the long stretch of the winter let this be a time of release in preparation for spring.
Be well…it’s a state of mind.
